Other Teams and Communities / Web publishing
« on: August 06, 2010, 09:02:30 am »
We're a web publishing and web promotion company. Even though we have clients, all our processes are in house so no 'clients' in that sense.

My needs for Feng Office are as follows:

1) Training Repository - Store general training on our methods of publishing and promotion. Use workspaces to separate training into different business areas.

2) Task Template Repository - Outline the tasks required for each step in a process. Store them in a template.

3) Manage Work and Goals - Issue tasks to team members and track completion.

4) Privacy issues. We use offshore freelancers a lot and want to keep them segmented from each other - not able to see each other email addresses. For that reason alone I'll keep them in separate projects (workspaces used for project management only).

My implementation will be as follows (example only):

Public Training Workspace - for training docs only
  Customer Profiling
  Keyword Research
  Content Writing
  Pre-Publishing/Sub Editing
  Site Promotion

... Employees have access to all of the above workspaces, irrespective of job function. Freelancers will have access restricted to just relevant workspaces.

Freelancer 1 Workspace, Private - for project management only
Freelancer 2 Workspace, Private - for project management only
Shared Employee Workspace - for shared project work only

Perhaps later I may have projects for individual websites, I don't know - I can decide later.

A key for me is that some workspaces are for project management, other workspaces are for document sharing. Those are the 2 functions I'm interested in. Here's a key reason why I've come to Feng Office: other apps seem to have environments focussed on EITHER document sharing OR project management. Feng Office is flexible in letting you have both. A workspace can be predominantly for one or the orher. So I'd love if (for example Task) tabs could be turned off depending on the workspace, or the user's permissions.

You guys need to add more information to your sales pages. I'd never have joined Feng Office based on what's on your pages. I found the information I wanted from third parties. Then I took time to go throuh the Wiki to grasp the app's functions.

You basically have to move summarized information from the document Wiki to those sales info pages.

Check out Deskaway's feature tour page. That's what persuaded me to go with them. They basically put their training videos in the sales area.

Edit : the reason I posted this was because of that link above to the Features page. You're not fully doing the app justice there.

PS: I'm writing this because when I find a great app, I like to see it sell well.

Feature requests / Custom Welcome Message
« on: August 06, 2010, 08:23:01 am »
New accounts will see a welcome message saying: Create workspaces, Presentation, Milestones ... "Upgrade to a new plan" and so on. They might not have the permissions to do many of these things.

I'd like to have the ability to get rid of that message.

The solution for now? For each new user, login to their account and remove your widget before sending them their password.

Feature requests / Re: Make Non Permissioned Tabs Invisible!
« on: August 06, 2010, 07:22:41 am »
Actually since I posted I've decided to take a different approach using the Module disabling feature mentioned. My approach then is to just completely remove everything that isn't essential to doing the work.

So I've removed Email, Contacts and Web Links.

The only tab appearing in the test account now that they won't use is Reporting. But perhaps I could switch that on only when I'm using it and switch it off again (would that work?) So for now, I'll remove it too.

So that's much better for now. I still think the feature of blocking non-permissioned tabs would be loved by many of your future customers.

Ok, that's a start and I'm a *bit* happier. I don't plan to use Email in ANY workspace so I've now zapped it.

But I only plan to use Web Links in ONE workspace hierarchy (our public training one), so I can't zap it from ANY workspace.

Same applies to files/documents. I don't plan to give people permission to upload those, except in a few public workspaces. But the module/tab will have be visible everywhere?

Any chance you might be looking to amend this in future?

For now, I would have to write training saying: "In this workspace you can only do this and this and this".

But wouldn't it be awesome if they were just hidden so I didn't have to explain?

Don't get me wrong, this app is briliant. Other apps don't even come close. This (hopefully) just a small extra thing I need.

But I know that when I talk to colleages about you, several will say: "In practical terms, everyone in my team likes Basecamp because it's brain-dead simple". Does that sound familiar?

I'm posting here because I'd also love my Feng Sky implementation to appear brain dead simple to team members. But better than Basecamp as you won't have fixed tabs, and can reduce the display to the minimum.

Remember, business people want simplicity (with flexibility), plus organization. That's why I came over here.

Nice. Very, very nice indeed. :)

Thanks for pointing me to that.

Feature requests / Make Non Permissioned Tabs Invisible!

I'd like the ability to configure the display the non-admin user sees. I thought I'd be able to do this using permissions, but this doesn't work. Instead the non-allowed tab is still visible and they can click over to it. It's not until you press "Add New" that you see that you don't have permission - an error box pops up telling you.

I wish it worked the way workspaces work.

The way workspaces works is great in that non permissioned workspaces are simply invisible. Why not extend that to the workspace tabs?

When coming over here I was hoping to be able to reduce the complexity of the app for my hires, and showing them only what was necessary for their work. Instead they'll see email, web links and all that stuff and wonder what it's about.

A bit disappointed...

Feature requests / Show User Last Login Time
« on: August 05, 2010, 12:01:56 pm »
Hi, I currently have a Deskaway account and have stared with Feng Sky. One of the things I like about Deskaway is that it shows the time a user last logged in.

This is a great feature for virtual collaboration..  It's very useful when you have an offsite employee in another country, to see when they last logged in.

I suppose that when I start using my account here in earnest, the notes/messages feature might have the same effect.

Getting Started / Feng Sky No https question
« on: August 04, 2010, 07:01:47 am »
Hello,

I'm currently in the Feng Sky trial.

I notice that my Feng Sky account doesn't use https. Should I be worried about my password and other data being sent via an unencrypted session?

D'you guys have any plans to change this in future?

This then relates to another question I have: If I chose shift to Feng Office (self hosted, paid support) in future - would someone be able to help me migrate the data from my Feng Sky installation to my hosted version?

Luke
