Hello,

I am trying to download some of the modules you have available for feng office but  I am getting errors each time regardless of what mirror I try.

my current installed version is 1.6 and when I try to update , it tells me that  I have the most current version, although  I see on your site you are up to 1.7.  Is this an error?

I hope there is something that can be done to help me accomplish these updates and downloads.   I really do  like the direction things are going.

Ideas / The overall of it all
« on: November 15, 2009, 08:20:29 pm »
Yes, it's me, Big Bear again.  Here to think out loud and give everyone a headache simultaneously.

I look at OpenGoo and I say to myself " what is this good for?

I think of comparisons to other cloud offerings, such as Google apps, and I say, "realistically, how is this to be used?"

I am a huge proponent of private clouds, as public cloud services scare the heebeejeebees out of me.

First and foremost is communications and interaction.

This means email and chat or IM type of communication to co workers.

I think out reading a pdf or a report, letter to a customer/client that the secretary/office manager put together, this m

being able to share the emails from clients or suppliers, etc.. with other co workers to illustrate a point or position and have the  same info in front of everyone.

I do not see any online suite being used to create extensive reports or forms or heavily detailed spreadsheets or excessively elaborate presentations.

I do expect those documents to be readable/reviewable if not editable/creatable.

Communication, more than anything, communication.  Log in, check my company email, see anything my co workers want me to see, check the calendar the boss has set up, appts the secretary or office manager has added.  IM and group IM is a must.

collaboration next.   i want to make a comment or bring to a co workers attention a letter, a document an email that I am in possession of or they are and examine it together, get some clarification. that kind of thing.

OpenGoo needs first and foremost support for more file formats.   I should be able to read dang near anything.  I also really think that because the PDF format is so pervasive in the business world, it has a singular presence in OpenGoo.

There is no point 'competing' with an OpenOffice or MS Office because the work those are designed for is more in tune to "big' projects that are much more data intensive,  that once completed, can be uploaded to an OpenGoo and commented on/collaborated on.

OK, just my two cent.

I want you to know  I really think OpenGoo has a tremendous amount of potential in the 'private cloud' arena, especially for my particular niche interests.  (small biz, schools and non-profits).  Your direction on collaboration is already right on target and the scheduling /calendar features are well on their way as well.

I guess  I should say is let's not re-invent the wheel because the wheel is not what's needed in this situation.

I don't know if I am communicating what's in my head clearly or not, or if I am just rambling again.  So, I'll stop now.

I expect great things from opengoo

General Discussion / support for and from OpenGoo
« on: August 26, 2009, 10:52:54 pm »
I have gotten the feeling, that the dev team does read the suggestions placed in here.

I get the idea that the team is interested in responding to the userbase in terms of improvements and modifications for the future.

What I think would help many people 'see' this in action would be somewhere, either in the forum or in a blog, etc... where the dev team can point to suggestions and ideas presented in this forum when they are adopted.

no, it isn't necessary, but it goes a long way toward consumer confidence.

while we are not necessarily 'paying' customers for OpenGoo, we are indeed consumers of it.

of course,  I would also like to see concrete examples of consumers of OpenGoo who have the experience, knowledge, or ability to contribute code to the project do so and in a public manner.

someday in the future, BEL project will be self sufficient and one of our goals is to create a development fund in which we can award monetary prizes or donations to BEL Recommended projects, such as OpenGoo is.

I wish  I could say this will happen in a week or a month, alas, I can't.   I do know that it is one of our priorities, we are only too aware of the need for funding and support for FOSS projects to continue to grow and be viable pieces of the FOSS greater 'ecosystem.

General Discussion / OpenGoo reviewed by Matt Assay

First of all, I would like to say that people shouldn't take this persons reviews too seriously, he has been known to come down heavily in favor of proprietary software several times in the past.

Also, He has missed the mark on his topics as he did here on many occasions.  Not too many techs and admins  I know of take the guy seriously.
A sample of his "review" ( if you can call it that):

That's right. The first thing that struck me when trying to use OpenGoo (aside from its rather unfortunate name, which is yet another reminder that marketing is an essential function, not an afterthought, for open-source projects) was the download page.

Download page?!? I thought this was a Web office productivity suite. Why would I want to download an application?

I never found out. Once I had downloaded and unzipped the file(!?), I was greeted with this: ( the contents of the tar)
I tried finding the application launcher, but couldn't. More pertinently, why should I? It's a Web application, right?

I finally gave up and used the demo, instead. It works fine, though it's nowhere near as polished as Google Docs, and still left me wondering, "Why do I care, as a lay consumer, that this is open source?"

While  I personally think OpenGoo still needs a bit more in the features dept, especially in the documents creation and development area, to be really competitive with a Google yet.  It is not far from that place with a bit more time and attention, like all such projects, to become a sure winner in the 'private cloud' market.

Matt needs to lay off the drugs.

Feature requests / from testing at BEL project
« on: August 01, 2009, 02:06:22 pm »
So far, we have three of our team testing the webapp.

overall, from what  I have read of the other posts in this subforum, the additional spreadsheet, etc. functionality would be a great addition.

in documents, an ability to change format from 'wide' html layout to a traditional "page view' layout would go a lng way to helping users be productive.

New Community Members / Hello from BEL Project
« on: August 01, 2009, 09:31:47 am »
I am Big Bear and I represent the BEL Project, http://belproject.org

BEL project is a community/volunteer project to provide assistance to small businesses, schools and non-profit groups in adopting Linux and OpenSource software.

So far,  I have to say OpenGoo is performing very well in our tests and we will be adding OpenGoo to our list of recommended software as well as including it as part of the default installation of some of our customized remasters which are done to try to create a more "out of the box" experience for those wanting to adopt Linux servers, etc.. in our target markets.

As of this writing, OpenGoo has been installed to http and https environments, on both public and private servers.

The installation process has been both quick and easy each time and the provided installer does a tremendous job.

BEL Project has a testing install running for our members to use it's features and provide information back to us on ho wit impacts  productivity and usability, which is what we as  project focus on the most when we seek out OpenSource software for our target user base.

I will hopefully be posting back with more positive reports and perhaps some questions should, and if, they arise.

So far, good job all around to everyone involved in bringing OpenGoo to the Opensource community.
