This are the open source on-line spreadsheets I found:
- www.softwaregarden.com/wkcalpha/ (http://www.softwaregarden.com/wkcalpha/)
- www.simple-groupware.de/cms/Spreadsheet/Home (http://www.simple-groupware.de/cms/Spreadsheet/Home)
- code.google.com/p/trimpath/wiki/TrimSpreadsheet (http://code.google.com/p/trimpath/wiki/TrimSpreadsheet)
Have you found any other?
Which one's the best?

After watching this terrific demo (http://www.peapodcast.com/sgi/wikicalc97demo/) I have already made up my mind for the preferred Open Source Spreadsheet.
It is wikicalc (http://www.softwaregarden.com/products/wikicalc/index.html). Check it out.

Did anyone try the Zimbra spreadsheet?
Zimbra has a open source version of their product and they do seem to have web based documents and spreadsheets. I think we can take a look at their source it just might help us out.

Wow, I forgot. Good thing you mentioned it.
I think Marcos and Ignacio did try it. It would be good to learn their opinions.
Zimbra is definitely a sister project we should be following, and maybe trying to work together.

This is what I believe in a very abstract way what the spread sheet should simulate.
The online spread sheet is broken down to cells
Each cell is like a wiki page with its own history
Each cell like a wiki page can have their own attributes
Operations on cells and combination of cells will be based on the attributes of the cell
Many wikis already have a spreadsheet plugin. A few examples below
http://doc.tikiwiki.org/tiki-index.php?page=Spreadsheet
http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/TWiki/SpreadSheetPlugin
But they are not exactly as feature rich as the other (namely editgrid or google spreadsheets) May be because we dont have a FCKspreadsheet ;)

Ok. Agreed on that definition.
The spreadsheet is a very tough one. Having done a simple "bird-eye view" of the lot (Zimbra still a miss) I am still going with wikicalc. Of course, a formal evaluation would be the way to decide this. That is no small task though :-\
-
Could you have brief look at Zimbra and provide us a overview of how Zimbra has gone about it?
I cant because I right now dont have that infrastructure to setup Zimbra.
Thanks in advance
-
Will try it ASAP. :)

I just tried Zoho spreadsheet and this is what I will have to say about a hypothetical web spreadsheet (a slight modification of the one I stated few post earlier)
------------------------
This is what I believe in a very abstract way what the spread sheet should simulate.
The online spread sheet is a table of cells
Each save of the document creates a state or version of the spread sheet.
Each cell can have their own attributes (like color/type of data etc..)
Operations on cells and combination of cells will be based on the attributes of the cell - eg. mathematical functions - which actually make a table into a spread sheet.
----------------------
Any comments?

Agreed.
After some further investigation (still shallow; I have to admit) and with the activeCollab approach in mind, I now think that TrimSpreadsheet (http://code.google.com/p/trimpath/wiki/TrimSpreadsheet) would be the best candidate. It is simple, so that means easy to build upon.

Did you check the latest features added to pbwiki?
They have added spreadsheets to pbwiki using numsum.
Might give us some pointers.
-
No, I haven't. Thanks for the tip. I will try that too.
How do they do it? The sheets are hosted an NumSum's servers right? NumSum is not OpenSource right?
I did try Zimbra's demo, but didn't like the approach; you can only embed a spreadsheet in a word document. I downloaded the code, but I am still experimenting with TrimSpreadsheets, so didn't have time to take a look at it.

Any updates as to the pending or future integration of spreadsheet capabilities into OpenGoo?
thanks!
-
We had a meeting about the topic on Tuesday ... the project is in progress and we expect results, soon ... I'll tell the component developers to post about this.
Marcos
-
Hi all:
we had two or three main topics on Tuesday:
We are performing a redesign of the spreadsheet server architecture. No big deal, but is a must in order to maintain certain aspects of the code and the posibility to extend it, etc.
There are several changes on the client side too, with the same purposes .
in addition to this, the browser compatibillity issue is top priority and let me tell you is a headache (among other pains).
Before moving on, we have the need to consolidate and ensure what we've got so far (and test it, of course)
news coming up in a couple of weeks
keep posting!!

Using this really cool scripting language called Rebol (http://www.rebol.com), you can create small applications that are surprisingly powerful. For example, check out RebCalc (a 2 KB spreadsheet) at http://www.rebol.org/view-script.r?script=rebocalc.r
Rebol code works in over 43 platforms unchanged and the interpreter is rather tiny. There is also a RebWiki that works like a Word processor. And finally Rebol supports dialects or so-called Domain specific languages, so you can create a dialect that is specific to solving a particular problem. For example, one can create a Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) dialect so that Excel macros work inside OpenGoo.

Thanks for the information, we will take a look at it ASAP.
by the way, if you think theres something you've found and seems useful in some way, just post it
bye

Also check out the MagicPoint Presentation tool. MagicPoint takes a very different approach to the problem of editing presentations. This tool is based on plain text files and a custom markup language. Editing of slides is done with an ordinary text editor; the resulting file must be fed to the utility to see the final result.
Check it out: http://member.wide.ad.jp/wg/mgp/
Magicpoint has a few other neat features as well.
1.) Scribbling on slides during presentation with the mouse (two colors)
2.) One pixel time thermometer, visible to speaker, generally not on overhead projector: green for lots of time, yellow for wrap-up, red for time's up
3.) "swallow" features allows one to run an external program (X11) within a slide!
4.) %filter allows one to filter text in a slide through a rendering engine (such as latex2eps) to generate images which can then be displayed within slides.
5.) A variety of pauses, "cut-ins" (text sliding in from one side or another), fades (slide transitions) are supported. There aren't many of them, and they should be used sparingly, but they're simple and functional.

Folks,
I know this might disappoint a lot of people but I seriously feel that we need to have a spreadsheet component before OpenGoo 1.0 release. Even if it means that we will probably have something like TrimSpreadsheet or OpenRecord we should still include that for the sake of completeness. For a lot of people, Spreadsheets are the very reason they use an Office productivity suite and not having that in the first release might reduce the impression of OpenGoo.

@justforkicks:
Hi:
The alpha version of the spreadsheet is almost complete. It was implemented as a stand alone module and we are integrating it with opengoo.
There are minor issues that we are taking care of before release.
bye!
-
Check out this amazing AJAX Spreadsheet (Open Source) at http://www.zkoss.org/product/zkspreadsheet.dsp
This is part of the ZKOss Javascript library...
-
Looks really nice, but it's developed in Java, so it wouldn't be too practical to integrate with OpenGoo as it would add the requirement for Java on the server.

It seems your project to build an stable spreadsheet module did never finish??
An live spreadsheet editor in OpenGoo would give an huge boost!
-
The spreadsheets module hasn't been finished yet, and although you shouldn't take this as a promise, expect it to be finished in the next couple of versions.
-
Can you give me an inside on what the spreadsheet module is based on, reading trough these postings I'm not surre.
