Admin account not sending reminders etc after upgrade from 1.7.4 to 1.7.5

I have my admin account set up to send emails through a Gmail account.

I can successfully send a test message and in the Admin config it is set to send emails every ten minutes.

I recently upgraded from 1.7.4 to 1.7.5 (automatic update) so I am assuming that this caused something to break ...

I have searched through the cahe/log.php file and I see no reference to the gmail account that I used for the feng office admin user.

I don't see any feng office entries when I run sudo crontab -e on my server either.

Where should I be looking to troubleshoot this issue?

Setting a cron job to call on cron.php resolved the issue - though I am not sure how I was getting notifications without it
