Feature requests / Re: Is Feng Office going anywhere?
« on: February 16, 2010, 12:30:58 pm »
Thanks for your replies and discussion.  It is a complicated thing!

If there were a roadmap - eg. we knew what the FO folks were working on, it might make it more conforting to work on something as we'd know it would not be obsoleted in the next version by a core development by the FO team (I refer to the chat module I read about somewhere else in the forum that was started by both the community and FO team.)

It would also help to get a quote on how much it would cost for a module.  Just clicking a "Platinum" button and donating a sum of money doesn't tell me if I'll get that feature or not, nor when.  I'm not really prone to spending, I'm more prone to investing - which implies a timeline and a rate of return.

And lastly, may I ask who is ConradO?  I feel like I'm supposed to know  8)

I could not get email working either, and have since disabled the module.  I would very much welcome a Google Docs add-on as I do not use the document features of Feng Office, but we already use Google Docs *with* Feng Office, and any integration would be awesome.

The ability for all of us to edit a spreadsheet at the same time is fantastic, and is very empowering when half of us are in Europe and Asia, and the other half are in the Americas.

How To's / Why is a spreadsheet needed?
« on: February 13, 2010, 12:01:53 am »
Sorry for this question many of you may feel is stupid.

I read a lot of posts that say Feng Office is incomplete because it does not have a spreadsheet or other function.

I'm only a user for a few weeks, so I'm not as "seasoned" as many of you.

Because I can toss in a web-link to a Google Doc Spreadsheet or Document, and because those have a rich set of features, I don't understand why a spreadsheet (or general Office functionality like documents or presentations) is necessary in Feng Office.

Actually, I don't understand why e-mail is necessary either, when there are so many excellent e-mail clients available.

I honestly don't mean this as a criticism of Feng Office, or of other posters, I'm just wondering what am I missing?

Feng Office seems to me to be a good project/task/subtask environment, and a way to collaborate/communicate among team members.  I looked at over a dozen products that were stand-alone, or add-ons to Outlook/Exchange, or add-ons to SharePoint (like Bamboo, etc.), but none of them was fast and furious about projects/tasks/subtasks.

Project management features like gantt charts and reports seem to be more unique and differentiating for Feng Office than "also ran" features like oft-found document and office-related features?

I accept that I may just not "get it".  I welcome your responses.

This question comes from my ignorance of the open source model.  My understanding is that when something benefits a community people tend to code for it and share their code for the warm and fuzzy feeling.

When something benefits a for-profit company people tend to pull back because they don't want their work to be leveraged by someone else, even if they would have given it away in the first place.

Humans, by their very nature, are "relativity-based", and studies have shown that someone will gladly accept $10 every time, unless they are led to believe that if they take the $10 a stranger next to them will get $20, and then they refuse the $10 just because "that other guy would be getting more than me."  Even though they could walk away $10 richer, they turn it away!

How does Feng Office foster community contribution when it is a for-profit company?  For that matter, how does *any* company that stewards an open source product - eg. MySQL et. al.?  I don't think I've ever understood that - is it the services and/or support?

Oops, I thought that was how it worked already?  Maybe I am thinking milestone/task/subtask?

I don't mean to inundate you, but I figured if I did not post these things when they were fresh in my mind, they would get lost.

Ideas / Task notification e-mail could use more info!
« on: February 12, 2010, 04:35:54 pm »
For those of us who are already used to living in Outlook all day (or any other integrated PIM environment) it would be awesome to have task notification emails include just a little more information.

Currently they include the task name and a hyperlink to the task, and at the bottom I believe they also include the company and workspace.

If they were to also include the due date, and task description, that would be extremely helpful.  If they were formatted the same each time we could also use a lot of rules to process them!  Kind of a poor-man's API.  Both Outlook and GMail have extensive rule/filter capabilities.

If I knew how to do it myself, I would have already and I would have posted the code  :-\

Something like:
You have been assigned the following task:

Sorry to be dense - what exactly is meant by this?  What images and what overview are we talking about?

Thank you for this!  It took some digging and some updating (Feng Office has changed somewhat) but I was able to use this to create two new tabs, one for Announcements, and one for Labs, where we'll be building and playing with the Google Chart and Google Visualization APIs without fear of messing up the other tabs in the meantime.

How To's / Re: How to view more than 5 users?
« on: February 11, 2010, 10:57:57 am »
Oh, sorry - of course it would have been helpful for me to mention the screen I was talking about.

Yes, I mean in the Administration screens, where user accounts are viewed, added and edited.

I can only see 5 users per screen and there is no way to navigate into the list alphabetically like I see on many user/contact applications, a simple A|B|C|D|E|F... list of links at the top of the screen would suffice.

I also sometimes have blank pages, where the next-to-last page will have only three users or so on it, and then the very last page will be blank.  That happened when I had five pages of users, but now that I have nine pages of users I no longer have the problem.

Feature requests / Expand all?
« on: February 10, 2010, 11:44:47 pm »
Some way to "Expand All" in the workspaces would be a huge time-saver.

I have quite a tree of workspaces, and many times throughout the day I have to open my way down through the tree to get to where I want to be.

It would be great to be able to hold down the Shift key while clicking the little "+" symbol, and have all of the branches of that tree open up.  Holding Shift while clicking the All workspace could expand all branches.

Conversely, it could also collapse all...

How To's / Re: Moving files into new workspace
« on: February 10, 2010, 07:47:28 pm »
I'm pretty sure when you move a file you're asked whether or not you want to move it entirely or still have it accessible from the original workspace.

I also think there is a configuration option you can set that will default this one way or the other.

How To's / Charts?

I notice while trolling the tables in the database that there are provisions for charts...  Am I to assume that is part of the someday-to-be-released spreadsheet feature?

And may we request that be an option going forward from any Feng Office developers who might be listening in?  :)
