1.5RC email issues

When adding a user and selecting "notify" user the following error is generated and no email is sent.  The issues exists with either SMTP host or use php email settings (ie sendmail binary on machine)

I can report another e-mail bug: mail can be sent, but no new mail is received. even after receiving the confirmation (check e-mail - 1 new message received) the new message is NOT displayed. I tried all options (view all etc), the mail message is NOT displayed....
