What are properties for?

For every object (regardless of its type) you can enter 4 properties as name/value pairs.

Do this properties have a special meaning, i.e. can a search, sort, filter by these properties?

Properties aren't fully developed yet. When they are ready you should be able to add as many properties to an object as you want, not just 4. Properties should also be listed in the object view's properties section.

Currently though, property values are searchable, so they have a use.

I see.

BTW we have a wording issue here: "Properties" is already used as a generic term in the detail view (it's the title of the pane in the lower right). So perhaps we should think about renaming the properties which are only one part of the overall properties? How about "Custom properties", "Custom fields" or "Special properties"?
